Strangely enough it was while sitting in a hotel lobby in London in 1993 that I made up my mind that I wanted to work in hotels rather than become an architect. Watching the staff in the lobby, I said to myself " This is a much more interesting job, after all, you get to talk to and meet people from all over the world"
So after High School, I secured my first hotel job at the Park Hyatt Sydney in Housekeeping as part of the college requirement, and then subsequently moved to the Butler department, Front Office and then eventually as a concierge.
This job has given me the opportunity to work overseas in exotic places such as Maldives and Dubai where I ultimately received my keys. I returned to Sydney in 2008 and was lucky enough to come back to my old stomping ground at the Park Hyatt Sydney.
I always treat this job as something of a game, in that you never quite know what awaits you when you come to work, no day is ever quite the same, and the challenges keep you going and wanting more.
One of the most challenging requests I received while working in Dubai and one of the guests needed help to get his family out of Beirut during the conflict in 2006 as the airport was closed and flights from Damascus were full. After a few phone calls to the airline's top executive, we managed to get a car to take them to Damascus from Beirut and onto a flight to Dubai. Although it took 3 days to get them there, even so it was mission accomplished!
